Pleasures of Reading

Says the famous poet

“My days among the dead are past                                                                    

 Around me I behold                                                                                                     Wherever these casual eyes are cast                                                                                  The mighty minds of old                                                                                                        My never failing failing friends are they                                                                               With whom I converse day by day.”

Reading is perhaps the greatest source of pleasure to a person. Reading broadens the outlook, drives away the apprehension and lightens up the mind with truth and knowledge. An eminent essayist, Sir Richard Steele said, “Reading is to mind, what exercise is to body.” This axiom implies that reading is a way of life significant in buildout of mind.

Reading acts as a catalyst to the imagination and inspires creative thoughts. Reading develops cognitive and linguistic capacity, more vivid imagination, flexibility of thought and greater power of treasuring words and language.

“There is no other divine thing synonymous to knowledge” said Lord Sri Krishna in Srimadbhagavadgeetha. Such unparalleled knowledge with different facets can be fostered through reading. Indeed, the pleasures of reading hinge on the choice of books. The pleasures of reading may be lost when wrong choice is made of the reading material. A person should be vigilant in selecting the right type of books. Real pleasures of reading can be enjoyed through a wise categorization of material for reading. It is true what Bacon said “Some books are to be tasted, others to be swallowed and some few to be chewed and digested.” This means that some books are to be read only in parts; others to be read; and some few to be read wholly with diligence and attention.

 Books bestow to the well-being of our mental state and thus remain as our faithful friends. They never deceive or desert us in our hour of need like many of our human friends. “A good book is the precious life blood of a master spirit, embalmed and treasured up to a life beyond life.” It is a bountiful garden, an orchard and a storehouse of knowledge.

It gives an immense pleasure to read the books which encompass a person to instill master mind who can perk up his future. Through books we can reap the ethics from the experience of noble minds with the fortitude and elegance of their vision. Through it we come to have a keener and passionate insight into life. Life doesn’t have a dull and monotonous aspect any longer but in every page we come across fresh wonders and mysteries awaiting for us. Hence, “Reading is virtue and the best trait for a person to acquire to lay down a strong foundation today which assures a stellar future tomorrow to remain a beckon light in this competitive world.”

“Dream, dream, dream, your dreams will transform into thoughts, thoughts lead to honest work, work results in action and you will succeed” has been rightly said by Dr.Abul Pakir Jainul Abideen Abdul Kalam. Dreams can be accomplished by youth as they have commitment to action. To quote Jean Ingelow “Youth! Youth! How buoyant are the hopes; they turn, Like marigolds, towards the sunny side”.

Students’ life is meant for studies to become true and responsible citizens, formidable leaders and esteemed legislators as India entails such intellectually alert and adroit disciples. A nation of disciplined youth can travel in the path of progress. They play a crucial mantle in the endeavours for equality and justice. They must assimilate from the very beginning- the lessons of self-help, self-reliance and self-sacrifice. Youth should be jawans and take up arms against the corrupted people and spill the beans on to the public so as no person ever never has the nerve to indulge in any illegal activities.

As sizeable part of Indians are unscholarly and backward who are unknown regarding the new-fangled evolutions, the allegiance falls on us to empower and bring perception to them with latest trends, technologies and scientific inventions. As Shankaracharya says, “The springs of patriotism are deep rooted in Indians”, we should show it beyond the desire. “Janani janma bhoomischa swargad api gariyasi” said lord Sri Rama to Lakshmana when the latter, attracted by the opulence of Lanka, expressed an ardent desire to settle down there. “Your mother land, great or not, are forsooth greater than a paradise.” Hence, we should comprehend that our mother land is the only place where we can reach maximum glory and recognition. We should also look for jobs within the country and strive for its progress.

 We must play a paramount role in safeguarding our country by involving ourselves in politics. We are the best judges as we have mentally matured minds to differentiate between good and bad which is prevailing in the society. India being the country of many races, languages, religions and beliefs we should have unity. Thus, said Mark Twain “India is the cradle of human race, the birth place of human speech, the mother of human history, the grandmother of legend and the great grandmother of tradition”. But despite of this diversity the social structure there has been an unstable unity and affinity which had bound the people of this vast country into a well-knit nation throughout its chequered history.

The requisite of maintaining this unity in diversity and national integration is all the more indispensable. We should make people inculcate the ideal “One flag, one nation, one land, one hand, one heart, evermore!” which eventually leads the country to the pinnacle of success. Women constitute the most pivotal role for the upliftment of our country. The strength of our country depends on them. “Next to God we are indebted to women first for life itself and then for making it worth living.” We should accept equal participation of women in all fields to make the country economically amiable.

We should all create a nation which is one of the best places to live in and which brings smiles to the billion faces and also to realize the dreams of our former President, Dr. A.P.J.Abdul Kalam, a dynamic and versatile person. Therefore, always be ready to walk in the unexplored path as to succeed in life everyone must understand and master three mighty forces- desire, belief and expectation.

Education means modification of behaviour or the story of manners practically applied. Education is a method whereby one acquires all the traits which will help us to grow as ideal icons and holistic individuals who can shape the destiny of a nation. Education empowers the learners to make a significant contribution towards the progress by facing the realities of future life. It creates images of the future. Noteworthy part of education is that it enlarges, enriches and improves the individual’s image which eventually leads to the glory of his country. This is spot-lighted by Nelson Mandela as “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world”.

Education plays a paramount role in chalking out not only the training of the intellect but also the refinement of the heart and the discipline of the spirit. It is the exercise and development of the powers of the mind. True educational knowledge is which remains even after we have forgotten most of what we have learnt for the limited purpose. Thus, it is a sort of residue. This means that education helps for training the individual for the inner transformation.

A prolific writer, an impressive orator, philosopher and above all an untiring teacher, Dr.S.Radhakrishnan who hailed as one of the eminent thinkers of this contemporary world said “Education is the means by which we can tidy up our minds, acquire information as well as sense of values. Education should give us not only the elements of general knowledge or technical skills but also impart to us the bent of mind, the attitude of reason, that spirit of democracy which will make us responsible citizens of our country”.

The best service that can be done for under-privileged families is to give education in order to make them stand on their own feet. “If the mountain cannot come to Mohammad, Mohammad must come to the mountain.” Similarly, if a poor man cannot come to education, education must go to him because literacy is vital for every citizen. “Literacy is not filling up a pail, but it is very definitely lighting up a candle in the dark room.” Unfortunately, our country houses a large  number of illiterates especially among adults. Hence, it is a cause for concern to identify the momentousness of adult literacy programme and its role in the development of the country. Education which is a process of enlightenment is not meant exclusively for younger generation but also for adults. In the verse of Krishtakka, grandmother of Sudha Murthy “For a good cause if you are determined, you can overcome any obstacle. For learning there is no age bar.”

“What sculpture is to a block of marble, so is education to the human soul.” This is because education being a sub-social system, it plays a crucial role in reconstructing the society. Bhartrihari, the ancient poet herein glorifies education as “Education fosters modesty. And from modesty one gains a good position. From a good position, one gains money and from money one can execute righteous deeds. From such deeds, one gets happiness”. Hence, “Education is the apprenticeship of life.”
